Located upstream of the Charleston harbor along the Wando and Cooper Rivers, Daniel Island started as a hunting and recreation spot under the ownership of Harry Frank Guggenheim, in the 1940s. Later sold to the Daniel Island Development Company in 1989, the island was planned for residential and business growth. Accessibility was a challenge until the completion of I-526 in 1991, requiring a bridge for connection. Despite initial seclusion, Daniel Island has now evolved into a thriving hub, boasting a robust economy with attractions like The Battery's soccer games and the Family Circle Cup tennis tournament. The island offers amenities including banks, a grocery store, schools, and apartments. Notably, the island's residents enjoy the convenience of twelve miles of planned trails for easy access to local eateries and events. Its development has earned accolades, including the 2007 Award for Excellence from the Urban Land Institute and the 2004 title of Best Suburban Smart Growth Community from the National Association of Homebuilders.
